Product Description

Monel K-500 supper nickel copper alloy

Monel K-500 is a nickel-copper alloy that combines the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel 400 with enhanced strength and hardness. This improvement is achieved through the addition of aluminum and titanium, followed by age hardening, which precipitates submicroscopic particles throughout the matrix.

Chemical Composition For Monel K500:

Element Percentage (%)
Nickel (plus Cobalt) 63.0 min
Copper 27.0 - 33.0
Aluminum 2.30 - 3.15
Titanium 0.35 - 0.85
Iron 2.0 max
Manganese 1.5 max
Silicon 0.5 max
Carbon 0.25 max
Sulfur 0.01 max

Physical Properties Of Monel K500

Property Value
Density 8.44 g/cm³
Melting Range 1315-1350°C
Modulus of Elasticity 179 GPa (tension)
Electrical Resistivity 6.15 μΩ·m at 20°C
Thermal Conductivity 17.2 W/m·K at 20°C

Mechanical Properties Of Monel K500:

Condition Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa) Elongation (%) Hardness (HRC)
Hot-Finished, Aged 965 - 1310 690 - 1035 30 - 20 27 - 38
Cold-Drawn, Aged 930 - 1275 655 - 1100 30 - 15 25 - 41

Key Characteristics:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Monel K-500 exhibits excellent resistance in various marine and chemical environments, from pure water to non-oxidizing mineral acids, salts, and alkalis.

  • High Strength and Hardness: The alloy maintains high mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures up to approximately 480°C.

  • Low Magnetic Permeability: In the age-hardened condition, Monel K-500 has low permeability and is non-magnetic to temperatures as low as -101°C.

Applications:

Monel K-500 is utilized in various industries due to its unique properties:

  • Marine Engineering: Ideal for chains, cables, springs, and valve components due to its corrosion resistance and high strength.

  • Oil and Gas Production: Used in pump shafts, impellers, and non-magnetic housings, benefiting from its resistance to sour-gas environments.

  • Chemical Processing: Suitable for pump and valve components, offering durability in harsh chemical environments.

  • Aerospace and Defense: Employed in manufacturing turbine blades and gas turbine components operating below 750°C.

When considering Monel K-500 for high-temperature industrial applications, it's essential to compare its properties with Monel 400. While both alloys offer excellent corrosion resistance, Monel K-500 provides superior mechanical strength and hardness, making it more suitable for demanding environments. However, Monel K-500 may have a greater tendency toward stress-corrosion cracking in certain conditions compared to Monel 400.

In summary, Monel K-500's combination of corrosion resistance, high strength, and low magnetic permeability makes it a preferred choice for various high-performance applications across multiple industries.
